We really appreciated working with a network of editors. We knew that if one editor had other work commitments, a colleague would always be ready to take over.
—Zoe Nielsen, Deputy Director of the Human Security Centre
The members of WEST COAST EDITORIAL ASSOCIATES have the flexibility and the experience to take on one aspect or all phases of a particular project.
Our professional objective has always been simple: to produce the best product possible, on time and on budget. The quality of our work is on display in the following projects.
The Human Security Report 2005: War and Peace in the 21st Century is a groundbreaking study of the decline in wars, genocides, and human rights abuses over the past decade. The project was a large and challenging one. WCEA members worked with staff at the Human Security Centre over the course of three years to provide structural editing, copy editing, and proofreading services. Because of rapidly changing world events, many rewrites were needed and many aspects of the presentation and content were reconceived as circumstances required. According to Zoe Nielsen, Deputy Director of the Human Security Centre, “West Coast Editorial Associates provided invaluable support during the production of the Human Security Report. They were extremely professional and at times worked under very tight deadlines in order to accommodate our production schedule.”
Prairie: A Natural History, by Candace Savage, is an award-winning guide to the biology and ecology of the prairies. WCEA completed the copy editing of this beautiful book, making sure that the plant and animal names were correct and that the many photographs and illustrations were accurately captioned. Nancy Flight, Associate Publisher of Greystone Books, said, “We really appreciated the careful work done by West Coast Editorial Associates on this project. There is no doubt that the copy editing contributed to the quality of Prairie.”
Report of the Walkerton Inquiry describes the May 2000 contamination of the water supply for Walkerton, Ontario, and proposes a strategy for ensuring safe drinking water in the future. WCEA members participated in the project by editing background papers commissioned by the Inquiry. Sheila Protti, General Editor of the Walkerton Inquiry papers, said, “The West Coast Editorial Associates team demonstrated sound editing abilities by reworking two technical papers—one multi-authored with many illustrations and references. They turned both papers into coherent and accessible documents.”
The InfoRead Mathematics books are part of an innovative educational publishing project that integrates mathematics with language arts instruction. WCEA provided developmental editing services, working with teachers, writers, and designers to make a variety of mathematical concepts accessible to young readers. According to Norma Kennedy, Senior Program Manager at Thomson Nelson, “These books were very complex to put together. Each had to meet strict literacy standards and address very specific math curriculum outcomes. Of course, they also had to be relevant, fun, and age-appropriate for the readers, as well as letter-perfect and eye-catching. Our team could not have accomplished what we did, or done it so well, without the diligence, professionalism, perseverance, and organizational abilities of West Coast Editorial Associates personnel.”
